www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iulUiC5VUIThe natives of this area misidentify Hawkweed as Dandelions. They can't fool me I am able to recognize both flowers even though everyone I have mentioned it to insists that Hawkweed is a Dandelion. This guy was quite busy eating and apparently defecating at the same time. It appeared as if he was aware of me but I don't know if that is the case. I do not know if their nervous systems have that capability. After a rain these guys are out in bunches. While feeding the ducks I wondered if they would eat slugs. I grabbed one and threw it in with the bread crumbs. The ducks ate the bread first and then I threw one last piece right next to the slug. He grabbed that piece and then his eye noticed the slug. In one quick dart of his neck and a short series of gulps that slug was on his way to becoming a duck.

Look at the leaves and the stem. Dandelions are shorter with 2 to 5 branches having a single flower, Hawkweed grow from 1 to 3 ft tall with a group of flowers on a single stem. These are Dandelion : AND THESE ARE HAWKWEED

Well yes you have it right. Dandelion has as the most distinguishing features of the two a hollow stem and is considerably shorter. However not one local here has been able to distinquish between them as far as I can tell. This is not uncommon Hawkweed according to this link, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawkweed is similar to a dandelion.
