I was thinking of how many fans place the Klitschko brothers as being great.
I got to wondering how either one of them might fare against Max Schmelling. I am of the opinion that Schmelling would have not had any trouble with them.
Then I began to imagine the Klitschko's in against Joe Louis and I could not imagine a scenario in which either of them would beat Louis.
If I am right are the Klitschko's considered so good only because their competition is below average?
If you think I am incorrect in this assessment produce a scenario in which either of the Klitschko's could beat either Louis or Schmelling.
My feeling is that the Klitschko's would easily have fit into the 'bum of the month' club that built Louis career. I see Schmelling's boxing skills and his heavy hands as the ability to trump the Klitschko's efforts.
The Klitschko's are tough disciplined and talented. But only to a degree and there is a point in their ability where their toughness is greater than their skill.
That is what I feel would be the difference in a fight with either Louis or Schmelling

Louis and Schmelling fight 1: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt7j2bzUNOQ This is an great fight noted for its historical significance for the culture more than the significance of boxing. Follow it through all parts. The rematch. I would love to see both of the Klitschko's face an oppenent like Louis in the second Schmelling fight. See it here and explain how the gangling Klitschko's could respond to an attack like this. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6StIjEli_vU

I think it's really difficult to compare athletes in any different areas, especially in boxing, it maybe one of the most difficult if not the most difficult sport to make such comparisons. Now, I maybe biased in my assessment, since I am a Klitschko fan. However, that being said I will reiterate what commentators and trainers like Larry Merchant and Nazim Richards alluded too, and that is guys like Joe Louis would struggle with either of the Klitschko brothers.
Not only do the Klitschko brothers dominate in sheer terms of height (4-5 inches), but they would out weigh guys like Joe Louis by nearly 50-60 pounds. Not only are they big men, but there big men who are also athletic and can box. Now this doesn't mean I rank either of the Klitschko brothers higher than Louis (I don't have either of the Klitschko bros in my top heavy's of all time). But I think the smaller HW's of the past would struggle with the talented big heavy's of today, whether it's the klitschko brothers or guys like lennox lewis.

I have seen my respect for the K's grow over the years. And you are right comparing fighters from different eras of the sport is like comparing different items. I would love to see either of the K's fight Louis in his prime. Louis did not have a lot trouble with bigger men. The K's are solid defensive fighters and can cause. The K's might be able to keep him tied up but if he has 12 rounds he should be able to land his hooks and if he does I would like to see what would happen. Louis had blazing fast hand speed and he hit like a sledge hammer. True he was a much smaller heavyweight than either of the K's.
