This is my favorite Twilight Zone episode.
Push the button and you will collect $200,000. If you do someone you don't know will die as a result. What would you do?
Think about this in all the contexts you might imagine. Warfare, politics, simple self concern or whatever scenario you wish to explore within the context of the human personality and human experience.
I first saw this as a teenager in my parents living room and was truly captivated by those questions.
Would you push the button? It's a question Congressmen answer without blinking an eye. They push it all the time. Health care, housing, mortgage relief, Iraq, Vietnam Afghanistan, off shore drilling, the list is endless.
Is pushing the button equivalent to voting? I believe it is. Most citizens do not believe that by voting they vote to kill someone. But it is true.
You've got to see this episode. The irony of being a citizen in a war mongering nation is wonderful (in that it should make you wonder) when the citizens think of themselves as the innocents while all along they are enablers of atrocity .
I was really glad to find this. It is something that should make people want to take back the power they have given to others by which the others act out atrocities in their name. And then we are asked to be aghast that people hate us. Go figure.
