The questions goes back to the founding fathers who wanted no restrictions on their life. It is impossible to think that they would have created the society we live in on purpose. We can argue, then, that it was not their intent that present society should be understood as liberated or American in the context which the 'founding fathers conceived of liberty or self governance.
Doesn't the Rolling Stones song ( below) take on a different meaning now? You and I agreed in a social contract to kill the Kennedy's. What I understand from this is that we are capable of manufacturing evil or good.
This ability is the quintessence of what it means to be human. It is our nature to create reality. With our thoughts we create the world around us.
Why did we create the one we have now? If we ask ourselves that question we can decide if we want to keep doing it.
