Name the fighters through out historyand place them in the context of toughness. Lets take this as an experimental project and add the names and look into the details behind them.
Name those you believe deserrve the designation of being a tough guy in the ring.
Here's a partial, very partial list, due to my lack of knowledge.
Carmen Basilio (nuff said)
Jake Lamotta
Mohammad Ali who fought 9 rounds with a broken jaw against Ken Norton, and sustained the assualts of the best left hooker and pressure fighter of his generation and possible of history.
Tex Cobb a subordinary heavyweight that could be beaten to death and still answer the bell.
Ray Robinson (surprised?)
Abe Attell
Lew Jenkins
Tony Zale
Arturo Gatti
Mickey Ward
Livingstone Bramble
Rocky Marcianio
Archie Moore.
The above choices are just some I picked out of my filmy memory. (though I am subjectively partial to Basilio)
I believe they represent toughness. It is not a comprehensive list for sure. Add those you think are tough or tougher than the ones I listed.
Heres a discussion from another forum.

As a footnote. I feel that the 20's through the mid 50's of the previous millenium contain some of the toughest fighters and that bringing these men to rememberance is needed to keep boxing history vibrant.
I'm tired hearing of Gatti and Ward being awesome. Well neither of them ever fought with their ear hanging off or their nose split open. I imagine Gatti and Ward would have done that. It was not in the cards for that to be their experience.
