This poem is one of the most emotionally powerful poems of the 20th century and perhaps the finest poem written in the 20th century. Allen comes to terms with the death and life of his mother in this poem. It is humbling to read (listen) this after having read his biography and understanding the background and the relationship he had with his mother and his family.
It was written over a period of 40 straight hours; the poets consciousness was driven with amphetamines and other drugs. Read a review here: www.litkicks.com/Kaddish/
