The links below are to A/V and written versions of the Tao Te Ching. It is alleged to have been composed sometime around 550 BC by Lao Tzu. It is not clear if Lao Tzu is actually the author, but it is attributed to him. What is of contemporary interest is that Lao Tzu represents a challenge to the courtly behavior of the Emperor which was championed by Confucius. Lao Tzu resented all of the phony acts of respect that 'polite' society of the day invented to take the place of working together. If you familiarize yourself with the concepts you will see how they could be applied to todays society as well. In fact the Tao Te Ching is actually a manual for governing people based on the understanding of the spiritual processes of life revealed in the 'Way of Life'. In one passage Lao Tzu suggests the best government governs the way a man cooks a small fish. In the context it makes perfect sense.
