I have a small piece of land near Mt. Greylock, Mass. Just off the Appalachian trail. Lived a spartan life style for twelve years out there. Good times they were, the best.
I still do a lot of hiking out here on the island, though 40 square miles has it's limitations. I have a 9' fiberglass kayak that get's some action in the summer, i sometimes take it with me on the extended road trips, nothing like passing through the early morning mist on a boat in a secluded, pristine area. I love kayaks and canoes If the sea wants to take you you're history. "Even the strong ones drown," as Miss Spinney said in "Portrait of Jennie". ww Had a rough one last year, a sweet row across the biggest lake here, perhaps two miles both ways. On the way back the wind picked up, the water started boiling with turbulance. Headed straight for the nearest land and hugged the shore back to my gear. On the skinny, a few years back, it took over a half hour to kayak onto a desolate spit of land across the harbor, after getting comfortable & falling asleep on a beach, woken up by sand being sprayed on my person, waves were high, tide had turned.... it was a hectic three hour paddle back to the real dry land. Had a unsinkable sea kayak at the time, figured if i drowned it would drag me to some local shore with wrist in hand. Open ocean kayaking is for lunatics, still it must be a great experience.

Reminds me of the time I grabbed an old canoe at the Appalachian Mountain Club's hut on Fire Island (wonder if it's still there) and tossed it in the Sound and paddled out to a little island that I called Onion Island. There was a hurricane stalled offshore that day and the ocean side of Fire Is. was ferocious, but the Sound was calm. But then, once I was on the little island, the storm hit the Sound and kept getting worse and worse, and to make it worse yet I found that the old beat up aluminum canoe was leaking like a sieve. I fought the waves going back, and in between bailing (luckily I carried a half of a plastic jug for that purpose) and paddling into the wind, I couldn't rest for a second or i would lose ground. It finally dawned on me that I was in trouble and I better forget about bringing the canoe back to from whence I borrowed it, and if I want to live I just better try to paddle it anyplace on Fire Island. Eventually I made it back to land, to a sea wall, and by then the waves were crashing against the wall, and trying to get out onto land I fell in, so I was wet and cold, but back on land and safe, and I dragged their ratty old leaking canoe on land too.

With time we forget lessons learned. We forget or we say 'fuck it'.

Were any lessons learned? Yes. 1. Don't go paddling out to islands when a hurricane is around the corner. 2. Don't swipe leaky canoes. 3. Carry a bailer with you at all times, even if you are in the desert or at a fancy restaurant. 4. Be sporting and give the ocean another crack at you at least once a year. Prez

Prez I would agree with your reassessment of making a judgment on a prior situation that turned out to be less than something you would choose if you saw the end from the beginning before you started. It would have been better IMO if you had stayed home taking acid with your face between your honeys legs while pondering the mystery of biological evolution.
